Ghost Telephone was a performative work in the 20th Biennale of Sydney: The Future is already here – it’s just not evenly distributed at the Art Gallery of New South Wales.

This work was specially commissioned for the AGNSW, with Ghost Telephone drawing from the Gallery’s thematic designation as the Embassy of Spirits. Ghost Telephone was a month-long, daily chain performance which comprised new, interlinked works from a suite of internationally renowned artists.

For Ghost Telephone artists channelled and transformed the spirits of existing works in the Gallery’s collection and displays. Each participating artist spent a period of time in residence with a selected work, attuning to its resonances and mutating its immaterial affects through their creative actions and words. The four artists’ residencies overlapped, allowing correspondences and reverberations to develop between the artists and their work.

Ghost Telephone was curated by Adrian Heatherfield. Heatherfield was a curatorial adviser and one of thirteen curatorial attaches working alongside Artistic Director Stephanie Rosenthal.

Participating artists in Ghost Telephone were: Hahn Rowe, musician and composer; Chrysa Parkinson, dancer; Philipp Gehmacher, choreographer and artist; and Benoit Lachambre, artist and choreographer.
