Lady Eats Apple charts the Book of Genesis through the emergence of a new Adam and Eve. An anxious and unpredictable God whips up the universe to garner praise, while the adage that God made man in his own image is explored with irony and humour. This devised performance is notable for its striking originality, subversive humour and fearlessness.
The show is presented in three distinct parts: the first, while suggesting an alternative to the usual story of Adam and Eve also forms a double vision as the characters are simultaneously performers rehearsing a play; the second is an odyssey through stories of near death experiences and psychedelia; in the third part we are transported back to the everyday world where our actors are working as cleaners. They explore romantic relationships and confront the everyday prejudice our society expresses towards those perceived to have a disability. In Lady Eats Apple the psychological experience of disability rubs against well-meaning but patronising attitudes and prejudice.
The show challenges and tests the comfort zone of the audience from the beginning, as you squeeze through an opening to take your seat in the womb-like, tent set.
Back to Back Theatre Company was founded in Melbourne in 1988. The Company is concerned with creating new forms of theatre imagined from the minds and experiences of a unique ensemble of actors perceived to have a disability, giving voice to social and political issues that speak to all people. Back to Back Theatre Company productions focus on moral, philosophical and political questions about the value of individual lives.
The Keir Foundation is delighted to support this project through commissioning and development.
