Medium is a powerful contemporary take on Lengger: the traditional, cross-gender dance from South-Java. Lengger was developed over hundreds of years, it demands complete control of the smallest gesture from the dancer creating a compelling and immersive experience for the audience.
Medium combines movement with live vocals and music, and is Rianto’s universal call for freedom, opening the space between manhood and womanhood; customs and religious principles; conscious control and trance. Medium was performed in Sydney as part of Liveworks 2018.
Medium is reviewed by Jill Sykes in the Sydney Morning Herald where Rianto’s presence is describes as “utterly compelling: a lone, barefoot figure in waist-to-knee tights on a bare stage, his moves are deceptively simple and seem to come from within.” Read the full article here.
